University of Louisiana at Lafayette
Faculty Senate Emergency Meeting Minutes
Wednesday, May 2, 2018, H.L. Griffin Room 147

A special, emergency meeting of the senate was called to approve of the Committee on Committees membership, and for President Joe Savoie to speak to the senate and answer questions on the provost search.

Meeting called to order at 3:33 pm.

Dr. Savoie answered questions and issues related to the provost search. He also fielded questions and concerns from faculty on how the administration dismisses the faculty and does not communicate properly, if even at all.

There were more than a dozen senators present expressing their disappointment and anger towards the university.

Dr. Savoie apologized and stated he will make an effort to improve these points moving into the fall semester. Savoie also agreed to attend at least 2 meetings during the fall semester.

At the end of the questions, Chad Parker (CP) stated we were happy to have Dr. Savoie come and speak to us, but this is something that we shouldn’t have to request for you to come and talk to us. This is something we need to know and should always be in the circle of communication – not just a provost search committee. CP continued to state the faculty needs much more for administration as we currently have an issue with extremely low morale and it’s demoralizing.

Dr. Savoie agreed that things used to be more open, but this issues around the provost search were special circumstances, although many senators expressed the opposite.

Dr. Savoie took serval points of note and correction from the senator present and said he will try harder next semester.

Dr. Savoie left the meeting at 4:51 pm, and the emergency senate meeting called to order.

CP stated the week of finals is a really bad time to meet, and he’s sorry, but this is information that must be voted on before the fall. CP displaced the names and committees on the projector.

Jim McDonald (JM) made a motion to approve the slate of individuals for committee service.
Motion seconded.
Vote passed.

CP stated the committees will be more proactive in the fall and McKinney plans to get together with Chairs on what the duties are.

5:00 pm motion to adjourn meeting.
Seconded, and approved.
